Chapter 8 Horse Riding in The 21st Century

How can we have the audacity to turn an ‘aid’ into a pressure …
Have you ever actually thought about the term ‘aid’? The term is a synonym for ‘help, assist, support, relief, encourage, benefit’. Consider for a moment what its meaning conjures up for you as an individual.
For me, the term has never sat well, although I did conform to a certain degree as I came through the ranks of coaching.
If we ‘aid’ our horses, how can we have the audacity to turn the aid into a pressure, such as pressure from our legs and hands, or pressure from a weight such as the weight of our body on his back, or a burden that can range from an unbalanced rider to the general stress we place on him?
We don’t aid the horse through his movements; we control him! I am no less guilty than any other rider is. Nonetheless, I strive to make my connections with the horses I ride as simple as possible. My following adage sums it up.
Horses are not robots, but we try to program them by constantly using the same aids regardless.
